A Young Man Hits Rock Bottom, Rises Above His Depression, Gets Alcohol Rehabilitation for His Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking, and Increases His Self Image
Samuel was a thirty-nine-year-old graphic designer who was sick of feeling depressed everyday of his life and sick of his unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior. Stated simply, he missed his old drive for doing the things he liked, he was annoyed with himself for spending his hard-earned money on a useless habit, he hated the hangovers he experienced on a regular basis, he was tired of going through shattered relationship after shattered relationship because of his constant drinking, and he was sick of feeling weary every morning.
Moreover he was bored with his drinking friends, he hated the fact that he had to go to court for his second DUI, he was disgusted with how out-of-shape he was, he was irritated with the many times he failed an alcohol test at work, and he was fed up with paying for alcohol-related lawyer fees.
In addition to the identifiable alcohol-related health issues he was going through, almost certainly the most troublesome part of his drinking regimen was the unreliable and conniving individual he had turned into. In his heart he knew that he had been deceitful about his drinking behavior to his family, friends and relatives and he also knew he had been less than honest with himself about the “positive” outcomes of drinking. Not only this but he rationalized gulping two or three drinks before going to social events and he also justified needing two or three drinks as soon as he got up so that he could cope with the “tension” at work.
His Depression and His Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking Result in Significant Changes in His Life
It was clear that Samuel was sick of putting up with the adverse consequences of his depression and his abusive and excessive drinking and finally determined that something major had to change in his life. So he determined that he would stop drinking, involve himself in some worthwhile hobbies, start exercising, get professional counseling, develop a new circle of friends, and start focusing on becoming a more healthy person.
Simply put, Samuel got to a special time in his life during which he understood that he hit the bottom of the barrel in his life and was now ready to start the gradual path that leads to recovery.
One of the ways that Samuel put his “plan” into action was by requesting a transfer at his place of employment. When his request was granted, he moved 400 miles away to a new state. If nothing else, this without a doubt made making new pals and dissociating himself from his old pals much easier. Then he contacted a physician in his new city and made an appointment for a comprehensive exam.
Samuel Meets With a Healthcare Professional About His Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking and His Depression
After meeting with the physician and going through a number of laboratory tests, it was decided that Samuel had made the unfortunate change from alcohol abuse to dependency on alcohol and consequently was in need of alcohol treatment and alcohol detoxification. At this time, the healthcare professional made it a point to review the different signs of alcoholism, the symptoms of alcoholism, and information about long term alcohol effects with Samuel.
The physician then told Samuel that it was decided that he was clinically depressed and in need of therapy for this medical problem.
Samuel Makes up His Mind to Fortify His Body by Exercising, Drinking Filtered Water, Eating Healthy Foods, Living an Alcohol-Free Way of Life, and Taking Vitamins and Minerals
Due to his readiness to follow through with the rehabilitation therapy, after five weeks of inpatient rehab, Samuel was ready to begin treatment on an outpatient basis. At this point, he started working at his new job and over the weeks began building up his body by living an alcohol-free way of life, taking vitamins, going to the gym, drinking distilled water, and eating healthy foods.
Samuel also came to grips with his spiritual life by joining the local Catholic church and participating in regular services.
After approximately seven weeks of outpatient treatment during which time he never went through an alcohol relapse, Samuel stopped going to alcohol rehab and instead began going four times per week to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Attending these meetings helped Samuel continue his alcohol-free style of life, they provided him with the support he needed, and they served as a continual reminder of the adverse outcomes that are related to excessive and hazardous drinking.
After going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings about five-and-a-half months Samuel felt that he was ready for a relationship and so he started going out with Sarah, a young lady he met at church. It clearly astonished Samuel how much more ready he was for a dating relationship now that he had his hazardous and abusive drinking under control. Indeed it also astonished Samuel how much better life was now that he wasn’t under the control of his abusive drinking. Life was now rewarding and loaded with potential that he could have never longed for or accomplished when he was engaged in careless drinking less than a year ago.
A Success Story That is Evidence of the Importance of Alcohol Rehab and the Power of Positive Thinking
Samuel’s success story is a tribute to the relevance of alcohol treatment and the power of change. As Samuel reflected on his newfound self worth and drive for involving himself in healthy, worthwhile activities, he was actually grateful that he made up his mind to do something worth while about his hazardous and careless drinking instead of giving into his depression and into the lure of his dependency. The result: he is involved in a loving relationship, his life now has a positive direction, he is in command of his life rather than letting himself languish under the control of his alcoholism, he likes his new job responsibilities, and he has more energy now compared with any time in his adult life.
